First, let’s talk about different types of communication:
Passive - This type of communication is similar to being a doormat. We don’t feel respected or heard in this communication style and it can lead to built-up resentment in the long term.
Aggressive - This communication style often involves attacking the other person verbally. This usually includes yelling, but not always! This communication style can often lead to the other person either responding with aggression as well or retreating altogether. It might feel good to release anger in the moment, but this can lead to guilt and shame for you in the long run.
Passive Aggressive - Think snide mean-girl types of comments. Backhanded comments that make you think twice about someone’s intention behind their seemingly playful tone.. Again, this type of communication may feel good momentarily, (HA, I got ‘em!) but comments like these can lead to a relationship breakdown over time.
Assertive - This is the one we want! Speaking from a place where we respect the other, but also respect our needs and wants. Communication is clear and effective. The other person can (hopefully) hear what they need to hear without getting defensive.
Note: Sometimes we can be clear, calm, and cool in a situation, yet the other person isn’t able to do the same. This isn’t your fault. Do what you can, and if the other person isn't able to meet you where you are at without getting angry, accusatory, abusive, etc., count your losses and move on, knowing you did your best. Therapy may also be a good idea in these cases.
Keys to healthy communication:
All in all, when it comes to healthy communication, the best policy is to be both open and honest, without attacking the other individual.
What has helped you communicate the best with others? What hasn’t worked well? What have you learned? Share your thoughts below!

]]>Unlike the idea that body positivity encourages an unhealthy lifestyle, it actually motivates you to take care of yourself and maintain the beautiful image you love and appreciate, not only promoting self-care, but also self-celebration, and self-acceptance. When you love and respect your body, you are more likely to prioritize your well-being, prompting you to make healthier choices. This could range from eating nutritious foods to engaging in workout routines which aim at nourishing both the body and the mind. You’ll begin to focus on feeling your best and being healthy while maintaining the image you appreciate rather than chasing unattainable ideals.
Embracing your authentic self-starts with self-love and acceptance. It’s recognizing that you are so much more than your physical body and that your appearance should not be used to determine your worth. The first step towards authentically embracing yourself is acceptance and self-love, which involves treating yourself with compassion and kindness and not necessarily conceit or arrogance. It is about offering yourself respect you would offer a dear friend, and it is about realizing you are worthy of care and love, just as you are.
We have all, at some point in life, been slapped by the societal standards of what it means to have the "perfect" bodies. Most of us if not all at some point have experienced the undeniable pressure to conform to a certain standard of the "perfect" body. A countless number of individuals have felt bound to strive for this ideal, oftentimes having to go to unimaginable lengths to meet these expectations. While everyone should be afforded the freedom to make decisions concerning their bodies, it is crucial to acknowledge the extensive influence that societal standards can have. These beauty standards can chip away at our self-esteem, making us feel inadequate, and inferior while causing an excess of undesirable psychological and self-esteem issues. Body positivity aims not only to challenge these standards, but eliminate them, by reminding us that beauty is diverse and that we are beautiful in our uniqueness.
Apart from promoting self-acceptance, body positivity involves embracing diversity without judgment and genuinely recognizing that beauty comes in different sizes and shapes. Through it, a healthy culture where everyone feels comfortable to be themselves is nurtured, free of pressure or scrutiny. Body positivity also celebrates diversity and casts questions all over the media's portrayal of beauty.
Let's explore some practical tips that can truly boost your journey toward a positive body image:
Remember, the journey to body positivity and embracing your authentic self is a personal one. It's not about chasing some elusive idea of perfection. Instead, it's about discovering a deep sense of contentment and pure happiness right within your own skin. Your uniqueness is where your true beauty shines. So, as you continue this wonderful journey, always cherish the incredible masterpiece that is you. Let your self-love illuminate your path to lasting happiness!
]]>Starting a new school year is a classic fresh start moment. Remember how you felt when you stepped into a new classroom with new classmates and teachers? Excitement and butterflies all bundled up together, right? That's the beauty of fresh start. They are filled with anticipation and the chance to make new friends, learn new subjects, and grow academically.
The same goes for a new job. The first day at a new workplace might feel nerve-wracking, but it's also an opportunity to showcase your skills, build professional relationships, and embark on a career journey that aligns with your passions.
Fresh starts aren't always about grand gestures like school or work. They can be found in the simplest of changes, like starting a new hobby or embarking on a fitness journey. They can also manifest in various areas of life, such as personal growth, relationships, and self-discovery. Life is an adventure, and fresh starts are the steppingstones that keep us moving forward, evolving, and reinventing ourselves.
Here are a few tips to help you start afresh and set yourself on a path to happiness and personal growth:
Embrace Change with an Open Mind. Now this can be daunting, but it's essential to approach change with an open mind and a positive attitude. See it as an opportunity to expand your horizons and discover new facets of yourself.
Reflect on Your Goals and Aspirations. Take some time to think about your goals and dreams. Fresh starts provide an excellent chance to realign your life with what truly matters to you. Come up with intentional goals and create a roadmap for achieving your dreams. Once you have a clear path, don’t forget to take small steps towards your goals. Break down your goals into manageable steps. Taking small, consistent actions will lead to meaningful progress and keep you motivated along the way.
Step out of Your Comfort Zone. Fresh starts often require stepping out of your comfort zone. Embrace the discomfort and know that growth happens when we challenge ourselves and push our boundaries.
Seek Support and Guidance. Embrace the lessons from your past experiences. Every fresh start builds upon what you've learned, helping you become wiser and more resilient. While at it, don't be afraid to seek support and guidance from friends, family, or mentors. Having a support system can be a source of strength and encouragement during times of change.
Cultivate a Positive and growth Mindset. A positive mindset is a powerful tool for navigating fresh starts. Focus on the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead, rather than dwelling on the challenges. Adopt a growth mindset, where you view challenges as opportunities for learning and development. Embrace failures as steppingstones to success.
Remember, every journey starts with a single step, and each fresh start is a chance to create a life that aligns with your true self. So, let's celebrate the power of fresh starts and embrace change as the catalyst for happiness and personal growth.
As you welcome new beginnings, let the words of Nelson Mandela inspire you: "There is no passion to be found playing small or in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."
Take a deep breath, gather your courage, and step into the world of fresh starts. The journey may have its ups and downs, but rest assured, it's a journey that leads to new opportunities, incredible growth, and a happier life. Get ready for an adventure of self-discovery, learning, and joy as you embrace the magic of fresh starts!

Studies have shown that black individuals are more likely to experience mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress compared to other racial groups. This is due to a number of factors, including the systemic racism and discrimination that black people face on a daily basis. As a result, many black individuals struggle to prioritize their mental health and often ignore the warning signs of mental distress.
However, it's essential to understand that personal and mental wellness are not just about avoiding mental health problems; they are about achieving a sense of balance, peace, and fulfillment in all areas of our lives. Personal wellness involves taking care of our physical health, engaging in activities that bring us joy, and establishing healthy relationships with the people around us. On the other hand, mental wellness involves taking care of our emotional and psychological well-being by managing stress, developing healthy coping mechanisms, and building resilience.
So, how can the black community prioritize personal and mental wellness?
In conclusion, personal and mental wellness are critical components of our lives that should not be overlooked, especially in the black community. By prioritizing self-care, seeking professional help, connecting with others, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in physical activity, we can work towards improving our mental and personal wellness and promoting a healthy and fulfilling life.

As an employee, feeling appreciated is one of the most important factors for job satisfaction and engagement. When employees feel valued and recognized for their contributions, they are more likely to be motivated and committed to their work. Moreover, feeling appreciated has been linked to higher levels of oxytocin, a hormone that promotes bonding and positive social interactions. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of employees feeling appreciated, and how companies can cultivate a culture of appreciation.
Increased Morale and Engagement
When employees feel appreciated, they are more likely to have positive feelings towards their work and their employer. In fact, a study by Glassdoor found that 81% of employees are motivated to work harder when their boss shows appreciation for their work. When employees feel like their work is valued, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to their job. This can lead to higher morale and a more positive workplace culture overall.
Boosted Oxytocin Levels
In addition to the psychological benefits of feeling appreciated, there are also physiological benefits. Oxytocin, often called the "love hormone," is released in response to positive social interactions and bonding. When employees feel appreciated and recognized for their contributions, it can lead to higher levels of oxytocin. This can have a range of positive effects, such as reduced stress levels and improved well-being.
Positive Impact at all Levels
The benefits of employees feeling appreciated are not limited to the individual employee. In fact, a culture of appreciation can have a positive impact on the entire company. When employees feel valued, they are more likely to have positive interactions with their colleagues and customers. This can lead to improved teamwork, better customer service, and ultimately, increased productivity and profitability for the company.
Cultivating a Culture of Appreciation
If you want to create a culture of appreciation in your company, there are a few things you can do. Here are some tips:
Show genuine appreciation: It's important to show appreciation in a sincere and authentic way. Take the time to recognize individual contributions and let employees know that their work is valued.
Celebrate successes: Celebrate milestones and accomplishments as a team. This can help build a sense of community and foster a positive workplace culture.
Provide opportunities for growth: Encourage employees to develop their skills and provide opportunities for career advancement. This can help employees feel valued and invested in the company's success.
Foster open communication: Encourage open and honest communication between employees and management. This can help build trust and create a supportive workplace environment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, feeling appreciated is incredibly important for employees. When employees feel valued and recognized for their contributions, it can lead to higher morale, improved engagement, and increased oxytocin levels. Cultivating a culture of appreciation in your company can have a range of positive effects, from improved teamwork to increased profitability. If you want to create a culture of appreciation in your company, start by showing genuine appreciation for your employees and providing opportunities for growth and development.

“African-Americans have a higher rate of Vitamin D deficiency, so the lack of sunshine on our melanin skin can literally impact our mood,” psychotherapist Farah Harris stated.
One of the most effective ways to overcome seasonal depression is to get outside and get some natural sunlight. Even if the weather isn't ideal, taking a walk or sitting outside for a few minutes can help improve your mood. Additionally, making sure to stay connected with friends and family can help reduce feelings of loneliness and depression. Try scheduling regular video calls or outdoor activities with loved ones to stay connected and socialize. Lastly, don't forget to make time for yourself. Whether it's taking a hot bath, reading a book, or listening to a podcast, it's important to do something that you enjoy and that helps you relax.
What is seasonal depression? According to Dr. Tyrrell Jenkins MD, MPH of Krave Wellness LLC, "Seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is when a person has recurrent episodes of depression with a seasonal onset and remission pattern. It is most common especially in the winter months due to colder and shorter hours of daylight."
Symptoms include feelings of sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in usual activities, oversleeping, and weight gain but these symptoms are not always what we see in the black community. Typically it tends to affect women more often than men and it appears in the form of fatigue, irritability, low energy, problems concentrating, increased need for sleep, increased appetite, aches, weight gain, self-doubt as well as an increased need to be alone.
“African-Americans have a higher rate of Vitamin D deficiency, so the lack of sunshine on our melanin skin can literally impact our mood,” psychotherapist Farah Harris stated. She continued to describe how that the mental health stigma in Black communities causes black women to keep what they are experiencing to themselves since they "need to be strong and magical."
Let's get into some solutions. How do we combat this?
This all sounds good but I know it can be hard when life starts life'n. Make your health a priority.
He suggested:
I know regular depression is not the same as seasonal depression but something Cassandre Dunbar of the Be Well, Sis podcast stuck with me. So I'll end with a quote she shared. "Many of us are depressed in part because we are living a life that we did not design."
Comment below ⬇️ What are some things you do when you see yourself going into a dark place? Do you recognize the changes in yourself?
Finances. Money. Wealth. Poverty. Living Paycheck to Paycheck. Disposable income. How do you feel when you think about these things? What comes to mind? Happy thoughts or negative thoughts? Good experiences or bad experiences? Jot down some notes, because today we’re going to talk about how to increase our financial wellness.
Raise your hand if you learned about financial wellness from your parents, teachers in school, or your peers while you were growing up… If you raised your hand, congratulations!! Not many of us have, unfortunately, but this does not mean all hope is lost. It just means we have the task of seeking out the information for ourselves.
Financial wellness can include increasing credit scores, decreasing debt, learning how to live within your means, budgeting, saving for emergencies, and future goals (who here wants to be able to purchase a home one day?) or retirement.
For many, talking about money isn’t pleasant. If things aren't going well financially, you may avoid the topic altogether. But avoidance will only lead to more issues down the road, and we all need guidance. It’s ok to admit you may not have much knowledge of financial wellness, and it’s very courageous to ask for help!
Here are some ways to increase your financial wellness:
1. Learn about assets vs liabilities.Sorry to say, your car may feel like an asset, but if you are paying a loan on it, it's actually a liability! Assets increase in value (this is good), and liabilities COST you money (generally bad). Learning how to balance these can mean the difference between being broke vs gaining wealth.
Invest your coin! If your money is sitting in a savings account, you probably aren't getting a great return. If you learn the basics of investing/trading that can change!
If you are finding you have more bills than your paycheck allows, it may be a good idea to track exactly where your money is going. One month, I didn't realize I spent over $400 at Target! That was an eye-opener. When you know where your extra funds are going, you can assess what money habits need to change, or if you simply need to find a way to make more money to cover your bills.
There are different debt-payoff methods out there, but the method that works best for you may not work for the next person. Overall, a good rule of thumb is to pay down debts that are accruing the most interest first. Another rule is to pay down the debts that are affecting your credit score the most. Financial advisors or debt improvement specialists can be great to help you find the best game plan.
Sometimes, we may not have people around us who know much about financial wellness. Consulting a professional or someone certified in finances may be a good step if you don’t know where to turn.
Read books, listen to podcasts, watch Youtube videos, follow “money gurus” on Instagram, Twitter, etc. Know that every person may have different advice, but the key is to find the common denominators in everyone's messages. For example, having savings on deck for rainy days (or months) is something we can all agree is pretty important.
This may seem like it's too personal. But one of the ways we can help ourselves and our fellow sisters is to TALK about MONEY. Being open with our community can open doors to insight and knowledge that can help us all win.
Here are some resources that expand on what I talked about above!
What are your thoughts about financial wellness? Share your feedback and knowledge below, we can all learn from each other! Don’t forget to share this post with your besties on social media and start the money conversation.

If you want a new carpet in your dining room, it needs to be completely cleaned and primed first! Your “spiritual space” should be treated in the same way, sis. Otherwise, you may find yourself patching up a lot more than just repairing your well-being and we don’t want that.
Spiritual Healing can help you if:
Spiritual healing requires you to stop being afraid. Remember, it is a journey. It is not an overnight, in-and-out kind of situation. It takes time, but the process will help you with your sense of well-being, happiness, and appreciation for life, love, and yourself. But, wait, where do you start?
Let’s be clear, spiritual healing does not involve the use of any specific ritual, but rather focuses on the ability to take control of one's life. This can be done through many different activities such as:
1. It’s time to forgive! Restore the harmony within yourself and/or others. In the end, everyone’s path to spiritual healing is different. What works for you personally may not work for your neighbor. The goal is to find the practices that resonate with you and will help you grow and glow ✨ into a better person—but keep in mind it’s a process. Spiritual healing is not something that happens in the blink of an eye. It takes time, effort, and dedication to truly get to the root of what’s holding your mind back from being happy and at peace with yourself.

The month of love is right around the corner and I want you to consider self-love. Self-love is the love of self. When practicing self-love you make the value for your own happiness a necessity. You must pour love into yourself before you can truly love others unconditionally. Ask yourself the questions below.
SAY, “Self,”
🤎 …am I you consciously practicing self-love?
🤎 …do I think about what I love about myself?
🤎 …do I practice self-care on a regular basis?
🤎 …how often do I put myself first?
These are some of the questions you need to consider when you are thinking about if you are even considering self-love as a form of Wellness. Self-love supports our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth. When you practice self-love you are practicing appreciation for yourself; you are also putting your well-being and happiness before all else. Some might consider the pure act of self-love selfish but sometimes we have to be a little selfish with ourselves in order for us to be our best selves for our spouses, children, close friends, and other loved ones.
ACTIONS TO SUPPORT SELF-LOVE
🤎 Stop comparing yourself to others.
🤎 Don't worry about the opinions of others.
🤎 Allow yourself to make mistakes
🤎 Let go of toxic people.
🤎 Process your fears.
🤎 Trust yourself and the decisions that you make for yourself.
BUT WHY?
🤎 Less Stress and Anxiety
🤎 Health and Personal Growth
🤎 Stronger Motivation
🤎 Higher Level of Satisfaction
🤎 A Boost in Attractiveness

]]>We’ve all had a tough past 2 years. With the worldwide pandemic, shutdowns, and more many of our worlds were rocked. I’m here to tell you that even though we are still in the middle of the mess, you can manifest what you want. I’m serious, anything you want… Looking for love? More money? A better job? The possibilities are endless.
You may be asking yourself, “what exactly is manifesting?” Manifesting is to focus one’s thoughts on a desire to make it a reality. To make it plain, it’s to actualize something that you want into existence. By being intentional about what you would like to manifest, you can manifest anything you want or desire.
Be Clear. Think about what you want and how you would feel if you actually received it. Are you ready for what you think you want to manifest? Once you are clear on what you want, make your intentions specific. The more specific you are the better. For example, say you want a better job. Think: Location, Salary, Duties, etc.
Write it Out. After you have a specific desire and you know exactly what you want put pen to paper. It is now time to ask the universe for what you want. Although this can be done in a number of different ways, start by writing it down. Frame it as a letter to the universe. You can also write it daily repeatedly. The 369 method is my favorite. This gem was discovered on TikTok. For the 369 method, write what you want to manifest down 3 times in the morning, then 6 times midday, and finally, 9 times at night. You can also put your manifestation in the universe with prayer, meditation, speaking it out loud, with a vision board, or putting it in a manifestation box.
Do the Work. Your manifestation will not see the light of day unless you take action. Going back to being clear, without clarity you will not know what steps you need to take towards your goal. Before you can do the work you must determine what steps must be taken. Take some time to determine what you must do and incorporate them into your daily routines. If you want to find love, for example, make yourself available and open to finding love by getting out into the dating pool. Make a point to attend social events on a weekly or monthly basis
Be Grateful. Practice gratitude for what the universe has already given you. Be thankful for what you receive on your journey. Change your mindset to being positive by letting go of any negative energy or self-doubt. Check your energy and the energy of those you surround yourself with regularly. Focus on activities that bring you joy and are beneficial to your wellness. Do not slack on self-care. Consider starting a gratitude journal.
Trust the Process. All things will come in due time. If you are doing your part, the rest is up to the universe. I suggest you stay ready and you will not have to get ready when the universe delivers.
What would you like to manifest?
✨ So you want to manifest love? Be more loving. Be open to new relationships. Love yourself. Be a person that is open to love. Add attendance to social events to your calendar.
✨ Need a little more kindness in your life? Focus your energy on empathy. Be more compassionate. Be kind towards others. Find local volunteer opportunities.
✨ Need more money? Focus on what you do have and not what you are lacking. Do not block your blessing with negative thoughts. Practice gratitude. If you have any coins to spare, open a savings account.
✨ Looking for better job opportunities? Network with those in the industry you are interested in. Practice interviewing. Explore opportunities to gain more experience.

]]>Oh, the holiday season! Just family, friends, and good times!
Don't we wish! In reality, the holiday season can be the busiest, most stressful time of year for us all. We may find ourselves running here and there for those last-minute items. Stores are crowded, people are angry and argumentative. Just grabbing some groceries has become a daunting task.
It's the week before Thanksgiving and a pinch more than a month until Christmas. Your regularly scheduled activities, except work, have now been postponed or canceled altogether. You're snappy towards just about anyone, your mind is running constantly and your energy levels are low. Overall, you feel sluggish and cranky, but why?
Let me help you out, friend. It's wonderful to put others ahead of yourself and try to make the holidays special to those you love. However, you forgot to treat yourself special. You put all the things that feed your mind, body, and soul off to the side. You decided that you did not have to have those things, that they were simply enjoyable luxuries. Friend, you were wrong. According to, clinical psychologist Natalie Christine Dattilo, Ph.D., "Without self-care, we compromise our mental wellness and our ability to cope with life’s inevitable curveballs.” You must allow yourself the time each day to feed your mind, body, and soul. It's not those moments when you're watching television or scrolling through social media but those genuine calming yet invigorating moments that give you energy and resilience.
"Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.”– Eleanor Brownn
Here's a strategy to use for guidance during your Unplug and Unwind time.
(Dattilo says she uses this as a checklist when she wants to be reminded about the self-care practices that work.)
Exercise or physical activity
Moving your body is one form of self-care, and it can look like a lot of different things. The key is doing what you want, or what you feel moved to do that day. Exercise does not have to mean white-knuckling your way through a HIIT class if that’s not your thing. Go for a walk, bike ride, swim, dance—really, anything that gets you moving counts.
Sleep or rest
I don’t know about you, but when I’m sleep-deprived or tired, I’m definitely not my best self. Besides the health reasons you don’t want to skimp on sleep when it comes to mental and emotional health, sleep helps you live your best life. Don’t forget that sleep and rest are not the same things, although both deserve places on your self-care list.
Connect with others or me
It’s natural to crave connection as humans, and these days, finding a true sense of connection can be really hard. Connecting with others can happen over screens, sure, but nothing beats the feeling of connecting with someone you love IRL. But if that’s not possible, virtual connections beat not connecting at all. That goes for your relationship with yourself, too. Make time to do whatever helps you feel connected to yourself, whether that means journaling or doing something you love.
Appreciate or gratitude practice
Gratitude journaling can be a powerful tool, but it’s not the only way to practice gratitude. Telling others you appreciate them is one way, as is reflecting on the things you are most thankful for.
Play or pleasure
Play is one term that adults don’t throw around enough. Find out what feels playful to you and make that your self-care practice.
Exhale
Focusing on breathing, whether it’s a single breathing exercise in a stressful moment or adopting a full-on practice, can help you calm your nervous system. Take some time to find a breathwork practice that works for you.

I challenge you to take 30 minutes to an hour a day to yourself to replenish your mind and body.
